Black Women’s Truth & Reconciliation Commission
Movement Maker Farah Tanis of Black Women’s Blueprint organized the first ever Tribunal of the U.S. Black Women’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The four-day event ran from April 28-May 1, 2016 and was held as part of the International Decade of People of African Descent at the United Nations.
As women and girls of African descent began to organize, they realized that their personal and collective transformation could not happen without public recognition and acknowledgment of the injustices and harms they experience. The Black Women’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission is the first of its kind in the nation to focus on rape and sexual assault against Black women in the United States. Fellow Movement Makers Jamia Wilson, Lynn Rosenthal, and Quentin Walcott supported this historic tribunal as commissioners and speakers.
