Mariners Win Philanthropic Award for Partnership with Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Seattle Mariners received the 2014 Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence today for their “Refuse to Abuse” campaign which they partner on with Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV). Through the program, the Mariners take a public stance against domestic violence and provide an opportunity for the local community to join this effort. Refuse To Abuse features Mariners players as role models, educating the community about available help and promoting respectful relationships to children and teenagers. Refuse To Abuse includes television, radio and print ads that utilize Mariners players to deliver messages of respect and communicate that there is no excuse for domestic violence. The Mariners also operate a charity 5K run/walk – the only one that takes place entirely at Safeco Field – that raises money for WSCADV’s violence prevention efforts. In 2014, the program expanded to include a partnership with Sound Publishing, the largest community news organization in Washington State, resulting in the promotion of Refuse To Abuse to millions of people.
