Movement Building Series Week 2: Leading With Vision & Purpose

In this webinar, we explore how leading with vision and purpose — one of four key elements in transformative movement building — can help us navigate and make choices in times of uncertainty.

Two Movement storytellers share their journeys leading with vision and purpose: Joanne Smith from Girls for Gender Equity, an intergenerational organization committed to the physical, psychological, social, and economic development of girls and women, based in New York; and Kelly Miller from the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, a statewide membership organization focused on ending gender based violence fueled by multiple systemic oppressions.

Key Ideas

  1. Visioning invites us to imagine an unimagined future based on the past, the present, and the future legacy we want to create. Visioning new possibilities is key to what makes movements transformative.
  2. Purpose serves as an inner compass to help us navigate the unknown. When each individual has their own deep clarity of purpose, our movements’ capacity for impact soars to exponential levels.
  3. Putting values at the center of our lives — and embodying those values right now — strengthens our grounding and awareness in the present, in past wisdoms, and in hope for the future.


Practice Guide: Leading With Vision And Purpose


This practice guide uses visualization to bring the future into the present, helping us to imagine a path forward to possible futures we cannot yet see. This guide can be used by individuals, as well as in groups for generating collective vision, for team building, or for developing alignment around a big picture strategic direction within a network, collaborative, or alliance.
